What Are Slip Ratings (R9–R13) and Which Do You Need?

What Are Slip Ratings and Which Do You Need?

TL;DR

Slip ratings show how grippy a tile is. R9/P0–P1: dry indoor areas; R10–R11/P3–P4: bathrooms, kitchens, laundries; R12–R13/P5: outdoor, pool, wet zones. Always match ratings to the space for safety and style.

If you’ve ever stepped out of the shower and felt like you were auditioning for Dancing with the Stars, you’ll understand why slip ratings matter.

No one wants to breakdance in the bathroom. Or do the accidental moonwalk across the patio. That’s why when you’re choosing tiles, it’s not just about looks…you can’t exactly admire your tiles if you end up staring at the ceiling.

That’s where slip ratings come in. They help you figure out how grippy a tile is underfoot.

In Australia, there are two main systems used to test this:

  • The Ramp Test, which gives us R Ratings (R9–R13)
  • The Pendulum Test, which gives us P Ratings (P0–P5)

Both tests are outlined in Australian Standards, so when you see a tile marked R10 or P4, it’s not just a random number.

These numbers tell you exactly how the tile performs in wet or slippery conditions, giving you peace of mind whether you’re stepping into the shower, firing up the BBQ, or running around the pool with the kids.

Why Slip Ratings Matter More Than You Think

A stylish tile is great. But a safe tile? That can save backs, hips, and visits to the emergency room.

Slip ratings aren’t just some technical detail to gloss over. They’re a practical way to protect the people in your home.  Especially if you’ve got kids sprinting down the hallway, pets darting through the kitchen, or grandparents using the bathroom at night.

Wet floors are one of the most common causes of household injury in Australia, and tiles without proper grip can turn everyday spaces into danger zones.

Bathrooms, alfresco areas, and pool surroundings are all major slip hazards if you don’t choose carefully. And it’s not just about preventing falls. Good slip-resistant tiles hold up better under regular foot traffic, resist scuffs and scratches, and are even easier to clean.

And no, choosing a tile with grip doesn’t mean sacrificing style. Slip-rated tiles now come in every finish under the sun:

In short, you can have peace of mind and a beautiful floor.

What Is an R Rating?

Ratings are assigned after the tile is tested on a slope with oil. Testers walk in special boots until they lose grip…the steeper the slope before the slip, the higher the rating.

  • R9: Low grip. Fine for dry, indoor areas like bedrooms and hallways.
  • R10: A touch more grip. Suitable for kitchens or powder rooms.
  • R11: Medium grip with texture. Suitable for bathrooms, laundries or mudrooms.
  • R12: High grip. Best for outdoor tiles, patios, or garden paths.
  • R13: Maximum grip. Built for pool surrounds, outdoor steps and wet zones.

What Is a P Rating?

P ratings are based on how far a rubber foot swings across a tile in a pendulum test. The higher the number, the greater the resistance (or grip) it has.

  • P0–P1: No go for wet areas. Stick to dry rooms only.
  • P2: A little better, but still risky.
  • P3: Moderate grip. Okay for bathrooms and entryways.
  • P4: Solid safety. Great for kitchens, laundries, and outdoor undercover spaces.
  • P5: Maximum protection. Perfect for pools, wet stairs, and exposed areas.

Tiles can be rated both P and R. Check both to be sure. An R10 tile might also be P3, giving you a better idea of how it performs in real-life splashes.

Match Ratings to Your Space

Choosing the right slip rating isn’t just about rules; it’s about how your home functions. Start with the messiest or wettest spots and work backwards.

Bathrooms and Laundries

Mosaic Floor Tiles

Bathrooms are full of surprises, shampoo spills, puddles from tiny toes, and steam galore.

R10 or R11 tiles with a P4 score are perfect for the floor.

For extra protection in the shower or for older family members, level up to R12 or P5.

Mosaic tiles add extra grip thanks to all those grout lines. Matt porcelain keeps it sleek without turning your morning routine into an ice rink.

Kitchens and Living Spaces

Kitchen floor tiles see splashes, crumbs and oil, so R10 or R11 keeps things safe.

If you’re concerned about cleaning, a lightly textured surface strikes a balance between grip and wipe-down ease.

For living rooms or bedrooms, you can opt for a smoother look. R9 tiles look great, feel soft underfoot and are easy to clean.

Alfresco Areas

Outdoor Stone Tiles

Outside zones are where slip ratings shine. If your alfresco is covered, R10 or R11 might do the job.

But for uncovered patios or anywhere near the garden hose, aim higher, such as R12 or even R13.

Want your tiles to do more than just grip? Try fluted finishes or stone-look textures. They keep things safe and stylish.

Pool Surrounds and Spas

This is where things get slippery. Pool tiles need to work overtime. Choose R13 and P5…no exceptions here.

Look for bullnose coping tiles around edges for added safety and a soft touch underfoot.

Stone look outdoor tiles work wonders around water, especially in lighter colours that stay cool under the Aussie sun.

How to Spot a Safe, Slip-Resistant Tile

Not all slip-resistant tiles advertise their slip resistance. Here’s what to look for when shopping or comparing your cheapest tile samples:

  • Matt finishes
Less shine, more grip. These reduce reflection and improve underfoot traction — especially when wet.
  • Textured or structured surfaces
Subtle grooves and ridges create extra contact between your feet and the floor.
  • Mosaics or smaller-format tiles
More grout lines mean more grip. These are especially great in shower floors or narrow walkways.
  • Ratings that matter
If a tile has an R or P rating listed, it’s been tested. Always match the rating to the room’s risk level (see the full breakdown earlier in this guide).

Cheapestiles Tip: Don’t be afraid to touch the tile in person. If it feels a little sandy or slightly rough, that’s often a good sign it will hold steady under pressure.
