Tile Calculator

The tile calculator helps you accurately estimate the number of tiles needed, preventing both over-ordering and shortages. Enter your tile and space dimensions, and the calculator instantly tells you the area and how many tiles you need.

Remember, this tile estimator only provides an estimation. Please make sure your builder or tiler confirms your exact measurements. If you need any help with your tile calculation, just give our team a call on 02 9790 4273 or contact us.

Factors That Affect Tile Calculations:

1. Gap Size (Grout Lines):

Tiles aren’t perfectly uniform, so small gaps are needed for grout. Standard grout joints in Australia are 1.5–5mm. Rectified tiles allow for tighter gaps and a seamless look, while larger grout lines highlight the tile pattern. Our calculator takes your chosen grout size into account.

2. Tile Size

Tile sizes range from tiny mosaics to large 1200×600mm slabs.

  • Large tiles = fewer grout lines, clean modern finish, but more cutting waste.
  • Small tiles = better for detail, splashbacks, and curves, but need more grout.

3. Tile Material

  1. Ceramic & porcelain – budget-friendly, versatile, easy to maintain.
  2. Natural stone – unique, luxurious, but higher wastage due to cutting.
  3. Mosaic Tiles – perfect for splashbacks and pools, not suitable for floors.
  4. Outdoor quarry/stone – anti-slip and weatherproof.

4. Layout Pattern

The way tiles are laid changes how much you’ll need:

  1. Straight lay (least waste).
  2. Running bond/brick pattern (+10% extra).
  3. Herringbone/diagonal (+15% extra).
  4. Chevron & custom patterns (professional install recommended, higher wastage).

Step-by-Step Guide to Calculate Tiles:

1. Room Area

Room size: 2.6m × 3.4m = 8.84m²

2. Tile Coverage

Tile size: 600×600 mm = 0.36 m² per tile
Tiles needed = 8.84 ÷ 0.36 = 24.5 → round up = 25 tiles

3. Add Waste Factor

+10% waste = 28 tiles total

Trim & Edge Calculations

Trims finish exposed edges neatly.

To calculate:

Linear length ÷ trim size = quantity needed.

Example: 3m exposed edge ÷ 0.3m trim = 10 trims.

Grout & Adhesive Calculator

  • Grout: On average, allow 1.5–2kg per m² for standard tiles.
  • Adhesive: A 20kg bag covers around 4–5m², depending on your trowel size.

Tips for Accurate Tile Ordering

  1. Always order extra for cutting and future repairs.
  2. Check tile batch/shade numbers (for consistent colour).
  3. Order trims, adhesive, and grout at the same time.
  4. Consult a professional installer for complex layouts.

FAQs

A tile calculator is an online tool that helps you work out how many tiles, trims, and how much grout you’ll need for a tiling project. It saves time, reduces waste, and ensures you order the right amount before you start.

Yes. The calculator works for ceramic, porcelain, stone, glass mosaics, quarry, and outdoor tiles. Just enter the correct tile size and material for accurate results.

Break the space into smaller rectangles or squares. Measure each section separately, calculate the area, then add all sections together to get the total.

Yes. Grout adds small gaps between tiles. The calculator allows you to include the grout width so your tile count is accurate.

Always account for waste. Use 10% for standard layouts, 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns, and up to 20% for natural stone or complex patterns.

Calculate each tile size separately for the area it will cover, including waste and grout, then add totals together for an accurate estimate.

Measure the space in metres. Multiply length × width = total m². For irregular shapes, calculate smaller sections separately.

Prices vary depending on material and location, but most tilers charge between $40–$70/m² for standard tiles. Complex patterns or natural stone may cost more.

1. Measure accurately.
2. Account for grout and waste.
3. Check batch numbers for consistency.
4. Use spacers for even grout lines.
5. Always round up tiles.

On average, grout costs $5–$10/m², depending on tile size and grout type. At Cheapestiles our grout prices start from $20 (5kg).

Use the formula: Grout Volume = Tile Perimeter × Gap Width × Depth. For standard tiles, approx 1.5–2kg of grout per m² is a good estimate.
