Factors That Affect Tile Calculations:
1. Gap Size (Grout Lines):
Tiles aren’t perfectly uniform, so small gaps are needed for grout. Standard grout joints in Australia are 1.5–5mm. Rectified tiles allow for tighter gaps and a seamless look, while larger grout lines highlight the tile pattern. Our calculator takes your chosen grout size into account.
2. Tile Size
Tile sizes range from tiny mosaics to large 1200×600mm slabs.
- Large tiles = fewer grout lines, clean modern finish, but more cutting waste.
- Small tiles = better for detail, splashbacks, and curves, but need more grout.
3. Tile Material
- Ceramic & porcelain – budget-friendly, versatile, easy to maintain.
- Natural stone – unique, luxurious, but higher wastage due to cutting.
- Mosaic Tiles – perfect for splashbacks and pools, not suitable for floors.
- Outdoor quarry/stone – anti-slip and weatherproof.
4. Layout Pattern
The way tiles are laid changes how much you’ll need:
- Straight lay (least waste).
- Running bond/brick pattern (+10% extra).
- Herringbone/diagonal (+15% extra).
- Chevron & custom patterns (professional install recommended, higher wastage).
Step-by-Step Guide to Calculate Tiles:
1. Room Area
Room size: 2.6m × 3.4m = 8.84m²
2. Tile Coverage
Tile size: 600×600 mm = 0.36 m² per tile
Tiles needed = 8.84 ÷ 0.36 = 24.5 → round up = 25 tiles
3. Add Waste Factor
+10% waste = 28 tiles total

Trim & Edge Calculations
Trims finish exposed edges neatly.
To calculate:
Linear length ÷ trim size = quantity needed.
Example: 3m exposed edge ÷ 0.3m trim = 10 trims.
Grout & Adhesive Calculator
- Grout: On average, allow 1.5–2kg per m² for standard tiles.
- Adhesive: A 20kg bag covers around 4–5m², depending on your trowel size.
Tips for Accurate Tile Ordering
- Always order extra for cutting and future repairs.
- Check tile batch/shade numbers (for consistent colour).
- Order trims, adhesive, and grout at the same time.
- Consult a professional installer for complex layouts.
